My First Encounter with AI

Internet Hacking and Cyber Terrorism In the recent past, concerns related to cyber terrorism and internet hacking have skyrocketed due to advancement in technology. These acts are often done in an attempt to expose, destroy, alter, or gain unauthorized access to the use of an asset or property. The current society is dependent on technology, which has the ability of introducing vulnerabilities that can be exploited by individuals with essential skills. Hackers and cyber-terrorists have the potential to introduce threats in a system and responsible for damaging information systems (Icaza, 2018) . These activities often result in the loss of resources, finances, and damage of organizational reputation. Cyber-terrorists have taken advantage of technological infrastructures to further their cause. The use of internet in malicious acts has caused the spread of terrorism in various parts of the world. Real-Life Examples of Internet Hacking Cases reported in cyber-terrorism have increa...
Cyberattack as a New Frontier in International Relations In the recent past, cyberattacks have caused a paradigm shift in international relations by defining power dynamics and the traditional nature of conflicts. In 2010, Stuxnet, a complex piece of malware targeted Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility by infiltrating its industrial control facilities, particularly Siemens centrifuges, leading to their eventual breakdown. This attack caused an imbalance in the country’s Uranium content for years, which shifted the global perception of war, escalated an arms race in cyberspace, and caused many countries to improve their cyber capabilities. Continued exploitation of digital vulnerabilities has caused the destabilization of critical infrastructure and loss of critical data, which has challenged traditional notions of state sovereignty and warfare. As such, cyberattacks should be treated as a national security issue in international relations because of their increasing impact on nation...

A mythological Perspective on Artificial Intelligence

T o most people, artificial intelligence is a modern marvel that became known to most on the 30th of November 2022 after OpenAI release ChatGPT as a free public demo. Its ability to generate images, engage in conversations, and generate human-like text made it an overnight sensation reaching millions of users all over the world. Unknown to most, the earliest AI-like ideas emerged, not from science as it is known today but from the roots of mythology. The spark behind artificial intelligence dates back to c. 3000–1000 BCE, a period when ancient societies imagined the development of artificial beings that are endowed with autonomy, purpose, and intelligence. This idea was driven by human attempt to understand agency, creation and the need to control the nature of the mind. Contrary to the mechanical intelligence that we have today, artificial intelligence then was associated with divinely animated artifacts, an aspect that led to the development of an intuitive belief that intelligenc...

My First Encounter with AI

Growing up, I thought Artificial Intelligence (AI) existed within the realms of the Hollywood fiction. Characters such as, Jarvis in Iron Man and HAL 9000 in  2001: A Space Odyssey  offered me glimpses into the futuristic world of AI, which often seemed unachievable to some extent.    That perception shifted dramatically one evening of November 2023. I had just downloaded a 75-page document from Google Scholar, in preparation to write an article that I had desired to publish for long. That evening, my brother called me, brimming with excitement. “Check the link I just sent you. Type any question you like into the prompt box,” he urged. "Take your project title and input the details as a prompt," he continued.  That day, I encountered AI in real life - not a humanoid robot with glowing eyes, nor a sentient computer plotting world domination, but a powerful digital tool capable of transforming the way we work and think.  Contrary to the Hollywo...
